About This Item

New York: Survey Associates, Inc, 1925. First Edition. Very Good. First edition of the groundbreaking March, 1925 issue of Survey Graphic, a magazine focused on sociological and political research. This specific issue was devoted to the African American literary and artistic movement now known as the Harlem Renaissance, and contains some of the movement's seminal writings. Guest-edited by Alain Locke, it was this publication cemented Harlem's status as the black mecca, and much of the material here would later appear in Locke's anthology that same year entitled The New Negro. Very Good. Wraps lightly worn and lightly soiled, foxing to rear cover, staple holes worn at wraps though binding is stable, light vertical creases to front cover and early pages, pages toned. With contributions from a veritable who's who of the Harlem Renaissance, including Langston Hughes, Rudolph Fisher, James Weldon Johnson, Jean Toomer, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, Angelina Grimke, Anne Spencer, W.E.B. Du Bois and many, many more. A rare and culturally significant piece.
