Spine and hinges are tight. William F. Stanley (1829-1909) worked his way from rather humble beginnings to become a wealthy entrepreneur, engineer, inventor, philanthropist, and one of the leading men of Croydon, Surrey. Among his many inventions was the wire-spoke bicycle wheel that we still use to this day. He began manufacturing and retailing mathematical and drafting tools in 1854, in Holborn, London. Within 10 years, he had expanded his product line to include microscopes, focusing on mid-priced, decent-quality instruments for students and middle class buyers.
