London: Jonathan Cape, 1955. 375 pp, 8" H. Green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, blind stamped title on front board. Colour map endpapers, b&w illustrations. The four Walker children are allowed to sail to and camp out on Wild Cat Island in the Lake District of England. Adventures follow as they meet the Blackett sisters and form an alliance against a 'retired pirate' (the Blackett's uncle) who accuses them of damaging his houseboat. Light edge wear to boards, a minor tiny bump to top of the boards, some darkening to the top of the text block. Dust jacket (protected in removable mylar sleeve) is clipped at all four corners, but price of "10s. 6d. net" is present, moderate browning to the spine, several edge tears - some with creases, small pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine, light edge wear/wrinkling.. Synopsis

Swallows and Amazons is the first book in the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome and was first published in 1930. It is set in the Lake District between the two World Wars. At the time Ransome had been working as a journalist with the Manchester Guardian, but decided to become a full-time author rather than go abroad as a foreign correspondent. He continued to write part-time for the press.
