About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1940., 1940. First edition. First edition. Fine bright copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket with a tiny hole [about the size of an eraser on a pencil], on front panel, lightly sunned on the spine, and with a tiny scrape to lower rear panel. One of Jeff Dykes' High Spots of Western Fiction of which Jeff says: "..a dandy tale of the beginning of steamboating on the Columbia River." "The central and dominant figure in this novel is the Columbia River, rather than the character of Caleb Paige, whose life was controlled by his overmastering love of the river and his ambition to be a captain behind the wheel of a river boat. Into the story is woven the pattern of the opening up of the wilderness, along the reaches of the river and its tributaries, with the discovery of gold and the building of new towns. The pace of the story is secondary to its sweep as an epic of a frontier."
