"Όμως μες στην χαρούμενη εορτή των Ανθεστηρίων, όπου ο οίνος έρρεε άφθονος κι έπαιρναν όλοι, ακόμη και τα μικρά παιδιά με τα ζωγραφισμένα λαγηνάκια τους, υπήρχε και η Ημέρα των Ψυχών, όπου νεκροί και ζωντανοί συνυπήρχαν. Το βράδυ της δεύτερης ημέρας ήταν θλιβερό και πένθιμο. Πήγαιναν στους νεκρούς προσφορές από όσπρια, την λεγόμενη πανσπερμία, και έκαναν σπονδές με ύδωρ στους τάφους τους. Τα φαντάσματα των νεκρών τριγύριζαν σε όλη την πόλη προκαλώντας δέος.
Την ημέρα των Χύτρων τελείωνε η εορτή και λεγόταν η παροιμιώδης πλέον φράση: "Θύραξε Κάρες, ουκετ' ανθεστήρια"· Φύγετε (έξω από την θύρα) Κήρες, δεν υπάρχουν πια Ανθεστήρια.
Η ημέρα των νεκρών είχε λήξει, κι αυτοί έπρεπε να ξαναγυρίσουν στους τάφους τους.
Βλέπεις πώς ακόμη και τους πιο αγαπημένους μας νεκρούς, δεν τους θέλουμε παρά μόνο για μία ημέρα του έτους. Ακόμη μας ταλανίζει η σκιά τους και το νεκρικό μίασμα."
