About This Item

Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1999. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Cloth 3/4 Illustrated Boards). Very Good Condition. Illustrator: Illustrated. Acknowledgements, introduction by author, to appendices, notes, selected bibliography and index. Dark rust coloured end pages. The text is illustrated with black-and-white reproductions of 16th century illustrations – mostly woodcuts. 1/4 black coloured cloth covered back strip with pale yellow coloured titles. 3/4 illustrated front board with white coloured titles with the rear board being a description of the work. In the early 1520s a young Italian artist Giulio Romano created a set of 16 erotic images – of various sexual positions – known as I Modi (the positions). The images were at first privately distributed, then made public; it was when the illustrations were made public that the authorities began to consider the engravings obscene and threatening even to the point of jailing the engraver. " ... The book is generously illustrated includes full translations of the infamous sonnets that Pietro Aretino wrote to accompany I modi. Exploring such issues as censorship, religious teachings about, and the influence of antique culture, Taking Positions is a major contribution to our understanding of the erotic in Renaissance culture." – from the rear panel blurb. Rubbing of the book corners and back strip corners. The panel show handling marks and there is a small scuff mark to the top right hand corner of the front panel. Full number line.
