He worked on odd jobs in the west for several years, including gold mining in Alaska, driving sled dogs, and helping drill the Cascade tunnel, before becoming a journalist in California. He later wrote fiction and non-fiction with western themes and settings, including novels, stories, fact-based collections of tales, and articles.
