George Routledge and Sons. Ltd. London. ND.,c.1883. 8vo. (7.3 x 5 inches). Beautifully illustrated with 8 full page colour printed plates engraved by Dalziel, each with a tissue guard. A very good copy in an attractive early binding of full burgundy calf. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt wavy line decoration. Compartments double ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Double ruled gilt borders to both boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Gilt stamped school arms on the front board. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bindery. A lovely copy on a fine early leather binding. The book is not dated but a search of Copac shows a copy of this same edition in the Cambridge University Library where they have dated its publication to 1883.:

Two volumes uniformly bound in early brown calf with gilt titled leather labels and gilt rules on the spines. The warped covers are rubbed and scuffed and the leather is splitting along the joints. There is heavy chipping to the second volume's spine with partial loss of that volume's title label. 283 pages & 305 pages respectively, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of William Shakespeare, engraved by Edwin after a painting by Zoust, at the front of the first volume. The hinges are cracking and there is a small piece out from the top of the front endpaper of the first volume. Several signatures are slightly pulled. The edges of the first and last few pages of each volume are darkened and there is scattered foxing throughout with occasional light dampstaining. Davison,Printer,/ Whiterfriars, and containing the address "Hanway Street" in vol. 2 advertisements. Engraved frontispieces and 18 plates after William Mulready, 3pp. advertisements at end of vol. 2. Seldom seen, this is the first issue of the Lambs most recognizable work, considered the first attempt to make Shakespeare accessible to a young audience. The book was commissioned by William Godwin's children's publishing house. Mary Lamb (1764-1847), whose name was omitted from the earliest editions, contributed the majority of the stories, while Charles worked on the six tragedies.
