[xii], 407, [1] pages. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; pictorial dust jacket designed by Doris Spiegel. FIRST EDITION, second state, with pp. 349-52 canceled. This is Fitzgerald's second collection of short stories, and contains the classic stories "Crazy Sunday" and "Babylon Revisited." The jacket designer, Doris Spiegel (1901-1996), started her career as a secretary to Blanche Knopf, president of the venerable publishing firm. Spiegel's artistic talents developed as she doodled on envelopes while waiting for calls to be put through, and in between writing innumerable rejection letters. She accompanied Blanche Knopf on a European trip in 1926, and met the Russian figurative painter Polia Chentoff who encouraged her to pursue her artistic training. Upon returning to New York, she enrolled in the Art Student's' League, and two years later won a Guggenheim Foundation award. Her jacket design for 'Taps at Reveille,' now a classic, exemplifies her talent for figurative drawing, and recreates scenes from Fitzgerald's stories against an orange background. Bruccoli A17.I.b.
