Engraved hand coloured map of Central Asia and part of China, 33.8 X 49.2 cms (trimmed to the margin), title cartouche and descriptive text in Latin, degree markings “Milliaria Germanica communia…”, text in German on the verso “Von der Tartaren oder dem Reich des grossen Chams”, central fold, sheet toned, small hole and split in the lower corner (r) and outer edge of the map, (minimal loss), tape adhesion to old mount on the verso, in sound condition. Most attractive map of Tartary: Central Asia, northern China and Iran, Korea (shown as an island) and the northwest coast of America. “Nova Zembla”, in the Russian Arctic Ocean explored by Willem Barentsz between 1594 and 1596, is shown, the imaginary Strait of Anian separates America and northern Asia, and the mythic land of Gog is noted. The map is adorned with a vignette of a nomadic caravan and their herd together with figures of a Tartar and a Samoyed in the lower corner, the Great Wall and mountains are depicted pictorially. .
