Temples of Knowledge - Historical Libraries of the Western World

A limited edition art book with exquisite large format
photography by Ahmet Ertug. Edition is limited to 400
and each copy is numbered and signed by the artist.

Foreword by Bruno Racine, President of the National
Library of France. Introduction by Robert S.Nelson,
professor of History of Art, Yale University.

This book offers a visual journey into the ancient
libraries of Europe through the eyes of Ahmet Ertug.
Thirty unique and magnificent historical libraries are presented.

Historical essays tell the story of libraries in antiquity
and their development until the 19th century. Throughout
history libraries have been havens of peace and tranquility,
places where people come to read, research, or just
contemplate and find serenity of mind. In the pages of this
limited edition book, the libraries of the Western World have been
photographed and their history told in expertly written essays.

This limited edition book is created by master printers and
binders in Italy. The exquisite volume is limited to 400
hand-crafted, leather-bound volumes. Photographed with a
large format view camera on 20 x 25 cm film, the vision of
Ahmet Ertug takes the reader on a journey through the spaces
of these ancient libraries.

The book has 160 pages, 51 single page images, printed at
41 x 51cms; and 49 double page images, printed at 51 x 62
cms. All pages are hand attached to the spine of the
book, avoiding stitching through the images.

A separately bound text volume contains essays written by
experts and historical information by professional librarians.
Historical essays by Friedrich Krinzinger,
Thematic essay by Thierry Grillet.

Berlin. Frensel Und Engelbrecher. 1931-1934. Bound in pictorial wrappers. 4to. 9.25" x 12.25 Profusely illustrated throughout by chromolithographs, colour and monochrome plates - many tipped-in, illustrations en texte, drawings, die cuts, etc. reproducing period advertising from a myriad of international sources. " Gebrauchsgraphik, Monatschrift zur Förderung künst-lerischer Reklame (Commercial Graphics, Monthly Magazine for Promoting Art in Advertising), which was published in Berlin from 1924 until 1944, was the leading voice of the Avant-Garde influence on the European Commercial Art and Advertising industries before World War II. In the thirties, all roads led through Berlin, and Gebrauchsgraphik spotlighted all of the aesthetic trends fermenting in Europe -- Art Deco and Surrealism from Paris, Constructivism from Moscow, Futurist Fascism from Rome, De Stijl and Dutch typography from Amsterdam, and of course the spreading influence of the Dessau Bauhaus. Foujita. The menu is also signed by Madeleine, Foujita's model and companion during this two-year journey in Latin America and by the Argentine artist Florencio Molina Campos, who added a small sketch of Foujita. Together with a group of two vintage silver gelatin photographs mounted on cardboard. The mounts measure 33.5 cm x 26.5 and the images 23 x 17 cm. These two pictures were taken at the event on April 30, 1932. One photograph shows Foujita dancing with Madeleine, the other shows them at the dinner in his honor. The other guests include Molina Campos and Guichard Jean du Plessis, author of "Hommes de la Pampa", accompanied by his wife Simone, a relative of the aviator Jules Védrines. The most successful of the Montparnasse group of artists, Tokyo-born Foujita's Latin American tour (1931-1933) was a great hit, with thousands of people attending his exhibitions. In 1933 he returned to Japan, where Madeleine died from an overdose in 1936. In Japan Foujita produced propaganda art during the war,… Read More

32x25 cm. Thuluth and Naskhi in black ink on paper illustrated and fexed on illustrated paper in golden flworal shapes. Signed in wite ink in Thuluth: Katabahu al Hajj Kamil. Ahmed Kamil Akdik is one of the last great Ottoman calligraphers. Born in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Istanbul in 1861, Ahmed Kâmil displayed an interest in the art of calligraphy from his earliest years in primary school. In 1879 he began to study thuluth (sülüs) and naskhi (nesih) scripts with the most renowned calligrapher of the era, Sami Efendi (1838-1912), and after earning his certificate in 1884 with the approval of Şevki Efendi, he became one of the foremost Ottoman calligraphers. His certificate (icazet) is preserved in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum.
After beginning to work for the Divan-ı Hümayun (the Ottoman Imperial Council) in 1894, he learned from his teacher Sami Efendi the divani and celi divani scripts, as well as the inscription of the tuğra, or imperial monogram, and replaced his teacher… Read More

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
