About This Item
TEN EPISTLES OF OVID. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE TRANSLATION by the Rev. Wm. Windsor fitzthomas published 1807 for C.and R. Baldwin, Bridge-Street, Blackfriars (London) in superb condition .Full Leather with decorated spine in gilt and red panel. 317 pages.
Full title: Ten Epistles of Ovid, translated into English... by Ovid Ten Epistles of Ovid, translated into English verse, by ... W.W. Fitzthomas. With the Latin and notes. To which are subjoined, the Epistles of Hero to Leander, and Leander to Hero, by a different hand; that of Sappho to Phaon by Pope; and of Dido to Eneas by Dryden.
My copy is NOT FROM A LIBRARY. It is a privately-held, clean as a whistle, no writing, ultra-smooth page edges copy with a (steel?) frontis plate drawn by Henderson
It is still in as near pristine condition for age as it was way back in 1935 when I was given it for winning a place at Grammar School. It was second-hand then as there was and still is an ownership label in Victorian script (Lavens Mathewson) inside front board). If he was of the Lavens family of County Tyrone, then he was born in 1845, and I guess neither he nor I read it as it appears unread.
