Collective first edition of these plays "composed in the French language, and performed by French actors on the Empress's private theater, called the Hermitage, in front of this princess and her intimate society, at the end of 1787 and in the winter of 1788 ". It is decorated with the portrait of Catherine II engraved by Tardieu after Meys, in frontispiece.
Of the nineteen pieces in this collection, seven are the work of the Empress. The other authors are Ségur the elder, the French ambassador, M. d'Estat, the count de Cobentzel, Alexandre Momonof, the prince de Ligne, M. de Schwalof and the count Strogonof. The last play, Imitation of Schakespear [sic], is a free adaptation by Catherine II of the English playwright.#D202CAT
