Theodor Seuss Geisel's career in children's literature nearly never happened; at least 20 publisher's rejected the manuscript, which was saved when Geisel happened upon an old college classmate, recently editor at the Vanguard Press, who agreed to publish the critically acclaimed work. With all points of the first state: the white pants on the front cover of the dustjacket; front flap priced at $1.00; and no further printings noted on the copyright page.
