"Progressive and prescient in all things, he promoted new agricultural methods, the founding of agricultural societies, the development of waterways and steam navigation." DAB. He fought with great brilliance in the War of 1812 and rose from Captain to Brigadier General in eighteen months. He was against Slavery, tobacco and was President of the American Temperance Union.
