The essays in this book were selected by Edward Garnett. He also wrote the Introduction. The author was a Scottish writer, politician, journalist and adventurer. His close friends included Joseph Conrad, George Bernard Shaw, John Galsworthy, and G.K. Chesterton. Graham was a Socialist with strong opinions, including being anti-colonialism. He also advocated for universal suffrage and an eight-hour work day. 354 pp. .
