A must have for any serious Civil War or Neale book collector. The 22 year old Neese mustered into service in 1862 as a corporal. He became a member of Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, ANV. With the outbreak of the Civil War, young Chew raised a battery of horse artillery, "Chew's Battery," which eventually became part of the famous Laurel Brigade under Stonewall Jackson's command. He participated in all Jackson's campaigns until Jackson's death in May 1863. Despite his age (just 20 in 1863!) Chew was promoted to the chief of the cavalry's guns under J.E.B. Stuart. He then served through the Gettysburg Campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. Neese became a POW in October 1864 and was confined at Point Lookout until the end of the War. Nevins I-176: "Among the best personal account..."Howes 278. Dornbusch II-1090. Coulter 469.
