A striking group portrait of six Tibetans, including a seated priest reading and fingering prayer beads and a woman, with her back to the camera, displaying an elaborate headdress.



British-born Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) photographed the landscape and architecture of India and the Himalayan region from 1863-1870. "[R]ecognized as an important landscape photographer, Bourne entered a partnership with Charles Shepherd" and "became a leading supplier of Indian views" (Pare, PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARCHITECTURE, p. 251).
