About This Item

F.E.Cheshire Pty. Ltd., Melbourne, 1962. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing) of the author's second book. This copy signed by the author on the front free endpaper, and dated a year after publication. 8vo. 216pp. Decorated cloth lettered in white at the spine. The backstrip ends and the tips of two corners bumped, and with just a little tenderness to the front and rear hinges. A very good copy in price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly chafed at several extremities and with a small area of surface abrasion to the front flap where a sticker has been carefully removed. Laid-in is a handwritten letter from the author on Rome hotel stationary to Dorothy [Sterling], the sister of Alfred Stirling, the Australian Ambassador to Italy, where she thanks them for hosting a "happy and charming evening" and also notes her "pleasure that you enjoyed my book". This particular copy was originally a gift to the Stirling siblings from the engineer Walter Bassett and his wife Marnie, a historian and travel writer; with their contemporary gift inscription inked to the title page. The wrapper blurb describes this work as a reminiscence ("a genre unusual to Australian literature"); it is an autobiographical account of the early years of the author's relationship with her husband, the artist Sir Daryl Lindsay. Five years later Lindsay would publish her fourth and most celebrated book - 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'..
