The wildly adventurous Perez Rosales traces his life from his childhood in a well-to-do Santiago family toward the end of Chile's colonial period, up to the 1860s. His many experiences and adventures included his seeing in Argentina, at the age of eleven, the executions of Luis and Juan Jose Carrera; journeying around Cape Horn to Paris where he witnessed the July revolution of the 1830s; trying his hand at practicing medicine; cattle smuggling; and on and on.
