Dumfries, Scotland: Maxwell, 1906. The very uncommon 1st Edition of this title. This copy was Signed by the Author in 1907. Andrew McCormick's 'The Tinkler-Gypsies of Galloway' was published in 1906. It was one of the first books to look at the life and culture of Scottish Traveller communities and is now regarded as a classic of Galloway literature. 'The Tinkler-Gypsies' is a fascinating mixture of folk tale, popular anecdote, historical research and social observation which McCormick described as 'some gleanings along a literary Gypsy by-path.' In it he looked at the origins of the area's Travellers and explored the myth and reality of Billy Marshall, the self-styled King of the Tinklers who, together with his band of Travellers, was the focus of many Galloway folktales. But the main value of the book today is its depiction of Traveller life in the early years of the 20th century. McCormick visited Traveller camps, talked to individual Travellers and listened to their tales. He also tried to record the 'cant' or dialect of the Galloway Travellers and found many words related to Romany, the Gypsy language. This convinced McCormick that Galloway's Travellers shared a similar cultural background with the Gypsy communities of England and Europe and led him to coin the term 'Tinkler-Gypsy.' This copy was also Signed by the Author in 1907. p. xvi, 477, xxx, errata page. With numerous b/w illustrations and photographs and one fold-out map in red illustrated cloth covers, a tad dulled to spine, with light rubs to spine ends. Tightly bound, pages clean throughout. [ Location: BR2/1 ]. Signed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾".

Description:
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1945. Political edition," only printing. Pamphlet. This is an extraordinarily fine example of the only printing of the "Political" edition of this striking wartime speech pamphlet. Published in April, 1945, by the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, this was a campaign piece for the forthcoming General Election, containing Churchill's March 15, 1945 address to the Party Conference at Central Hall, Westminster. It attests to the fact that, as the war in Europe drew toward an inexorable close, the suspended tensions of domestic politics intruded ever more urgently on the politically unified war effort, fracturing the wartime coalition that had acknowledged Churchill as its indispensible Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until…

Description:
Melbourne, Australia: The Henry George Foundation, 1941. Paperback. This pamphlet is a wartime reprint of extracts from two Churchill speeches delivered in the House of Commons on 4 May 1909 and at King's Theatre, Edinburgh, 17 July 1909. The publisher's introductory note states: "In now publishing these extracts it is hoped that Mr. Churchill's eloquent and emphatic criticism of the present Land System will not be lost sight of in the post-war reconstruction for a New Social Order of which so much is being heard." There were two impressions - a first of 5,000 in January 1941 followed by this second printing of 10,000 in June 1941. Both, of course, are now scarce, particularly in this condition. The pamphlet measures 7.125 inches tall x 4.75 inches wide. It is sixteen pages in length with stapled paper wraps, the front cover bearing a head and shoulders image of Churchill. This is a superior, near-fine copy, notable for the fact that the gray-green wraps maintain their original color, with only a…

Description:
PLAN, SECTION and ELEVATION of the POO-TA-LA of TEMPLE of the LAMA at ZHE-HOL in TARTARYThis monumental temple which looks more like a fortified tower was drawn by HW Parish in 1793.This antique original copper plate engraving is from Sir George Leonard Staunton's atlas folio of prints to accompany "An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China . Taken chiefly from the papers of His Excellency the Earl of Macartney". The work was published in London by G.Nicol in 1797. George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney (1737-1806) was dispatched to Beijing in 1792 travelling via Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope and Indonesia. He was accompanied by George Staunton, and a retinue of suitably impressive size, including Stauntonâ s 11-year-old son who was nominally the ambassadorâ s page. On the embassy's arrival in China it emerged that the 11-year-old was the only European member of the embassy able to speak Mandarin, and thus the only one able to…

Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People.
