St Philip's Books Ltd specializes in fine, rare and secondhand books in the Humanities, including Theology, History and Literature. The business is run from a shop stocking about 10,000 books opposite Christ Church gardens in the centre of Oxford (open 10-5, Monday-Saturday). Particular interests include Roman Catholicism, Eastern Christianity, Liturgy, Inklings (notably C.S.Lewis, J.R.R.Tolkien), Christian Art, Patristics, Biblical Studies, Newman & the Oxford Movement. The business started in 1995 and we are members of the PBFA and BA. VAT reg. GB 717 9250 21.

Please provide payment with order, preferably by credit/debit card (VISA, MASTERCARD or any other major provider) or PayPal. We accept Money Orders and cheques, made out to St Philip's Books Ltd, but please ensure they are drawn in Sterling from a UK bank to avoid a £5 bank conversion charge.
All books are in stock and available for immediate dispatch from the UK.
All orders are despatched the same day where possible, or next business day at the latest, typically using Royal Mail. If you would like us to upgrade to a tracked service, please ask, as these are available, along with Courier / UPS services.
The standard shipping costs shown are calculated for parcels weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your parcel is heavier than this or oversized, we may contact you before despatch to request extra shipping charges.
Books may be returned for a full refund of purchase price, including original shipping costs, if an item arrives misdescribed or damaged, provided we are notified within 30 days of receipt.

Traditional Jewish religious belief speaks of a divinely revealed, perfect text, authoritatively expounded. The question this book addresses is one with which the author has struggled all his life: in the light of historical criticism, advances in knowledge, and changing moral attitudes, is the traditional notion of divine revelation and authoritative interpretation still valid? The focus is on Judaism and the examples are mostly drawn from that tradition, but the arguments are easy to transpose to other religions. Norman Solomon's discussion will appeal to those who seek to identify with a religious community but who are troubled by the claim of divine authority made for the scriptures of that community.
