Description

A first edition two-volume set of the author's comprehensive account of field sports and natural history in Sutherland. A first edition two-volume set of this work, in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front paste down of both volumes, dated 1850. Frontispieces to both volumes. 2 plates to Volume I. 4 plates to Volume II. Collated complete. Charles St John (1809-1856) was an English naturalist and sportsman. His account of the stalking of the Muckle Hart of Benmore and was influential in the development of Scottish red deer stalking and has been described as a classic among deer-stalkers. In this work, he gives an account of his exploration of Sutherland, as well as hunting, fishing, and the natural history of the area. 16 delightful advertisements to the rear of Volume II. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, though spines are slightly sunned, and both volumes show some wear to the head and tail of the spine. Cloth is lifting slightly from the head of the spine to Volume II. Staining to the boards of Volume I; the hinges are also a little tender to this volume, but still reasonably firm. Internally, the bindings are slightly strained in both volumes. Pages are bright and clean, except for some spotting to the first and last pages of each volume. Very Good
