Description

Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd, 1835. Hardcover. Very good. iv, v, 473 p. 22 cm. Full leather with gilt impressing. Bumped corners and moderate wear to edges. Some light scuffing to front. Worn bookplate and former owner's label on front pastedown. Small ink mark on title. Some foxing to first and last pages. Patrick Shirreff (1791-1876) embarked on an agricultural tour of Upper and Lower Canada and the U.S. before allowing a younger brother to emigrate from their native Scotland. Back home, Shirreff was a pioneer of cereal hybridisation and was noted for producing several new varieties of oats and wheat. He settles on Illinois as a preferred place for settlement, Upper Canada being "an interminable forest."
