[vi]+294(last blank); pictorial green cloth, lettered and decorated in red, lighter green & black, edges lightly rubbed, the lower board slightly faded; text block faintly browned, edges a trifle foxed; Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1898. First U.S. edition, first binding state. Coustillas A20.9a; Collie XXb. *Published a couple of weeks after the U.K. first edition. The cover design, by the American impressionist painter and illustrator George Wharton Edwards, depicts the bigamous Lord Polperro outside Mrs. Clover's china shop. 'The whole front cover is taken up with relatively complex design . . . the predominant feature of which is a picture of a man in top hat and overcoat with astrakhan collar walking past a shop' [Collie, p. 87].
