Hartford, Conn: American Publishing Company, 1894. First American Edition. Leather Binding. Very Good. With Marginal Illustrations. Small 4to. Pp. 431. Portrait frontis. Black-and-white margin illustrations throughout. Marbled endpapers. In the publisher's dark green three-quarter green morocco over marbled boards. Gilt lettering, ornaments and rules in spine compartments. AEG. Spine sunned to brown, scuffs to front board, light edge-wear. Contemporary newspaper clippings germane to Twain pasted to front endpapers. Withal, a tight copy in very good binding. First American edition, first state with all the points noted in BAL. Quite scarce in the publisher's morocco binding.

Originally published serially in Century Magazine, the first edition was issued in Britain the same year as Pudd'nhead Wilson a Tale but lacking Those Extraordinary Twins. BAL 3442. JOHNSON (third ed.), p. 106.
