Basel, 1552. unbound. Map. Uncolored woodcut. Image measures 11.5" x 14.75".

Unusual early woodcut map of the Transylvanian Alps showing part of the Carpathian mountains, including part of Moldova, and Bulgaria. Features great mountain renderings as well as many rivers in this beautiful region including Olt, Mures and the Bistrita river. According to L. Grof, this map was based on Johannes Honter's 1532 map of the region which was the first separate issue map of the area.

Professor Sebastian Munster (1488-1552) was a German cosmographer, humanist, theologian and scholar. This map was not in every edition of Munster's seminal work "Geographia Universalis" and is therefore extremely rare. Light scattered foxing and toning along original centerfold. Three worm holes near the top of the map and a stain in the title. Full original margins.
