239, LVIII pp., (4) ff., 1 folding plan giving calculations for the sizes of casks & 3 folding engraved plates showing distillation apparatuses. The work covers such matters as the cultivation of vines, precautions against natural phenomena and disease, wine making, the economics of wine production, methods of fermentation and wine production outside Portugal. In the prologue (p. 3) the author promotes the export of wine in Europe and America. The status of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro (the Douro Winegrowers' Company) had caused controversy since the signing in 1810 of a Treaty of Commerce between Portugal and Great Britain. The latter pressed for its abolition or at least radical changes in its Articles, and many Portuguese liberals believed it to be a monopoly which denied rights to others in the wine trade; a Decree was issued on 21 May 1822 introducing reforms through which the company lost many of its old privileges. Innocêncio I, 184 & XX, 244. (Cf. Simon, Bibl. Vinaria (1979 ed.)).

Octavo (9 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches) Baltimore: Bacchus Press Ltd., 1992. Facsimile of the 1864 second edition. 540 pages and 24 pages of period publisher's ads., fold out charts, numerous illustrations. Wine colored leatherette, decorative cover (the title is surrounded by grape vines which frame a charicature of a happy vintner sitting on a barrel; all done in gold). very good condition.

A faithful reproduction of a scarce work. Shaw was originally from Scotland and had much to do with lowering the duty on wine imported to England. His writing is informative and humorous. He mentions American wines and in a prophetic remark states, "California seems better adapted for producing wine."
