About This Item
London: Richard Bentley, 1839. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. 8vo. Quarter calf and marbled paper over boards, compartments, gilt spine. xvi, 473pp; xi, 372pp. Frontispieces. Very good. Bit of mild age toning and tad of foxing, mainly to preliminary pages -- but overall a beautifully tight, clean, handsome set in custom binding. Circular blind-embossed contemporary ownership imprint at lower right of title page of first volume. First English edition of this important narrative, which Wright Howes calls the "Best account of the Pawnees while yet uncontaminated by Whites." Outstanding and provocative lithographed frontispieces depict (Volume I) "The Pipe Dance and the Tomahawk Dance of the Chippeway Tribe" and (Volume II) "War Dance of the Sauks and Foxes." Binder's small yellow "Seton / Bookbinder / Edinburgh" label on each rear pastedown. GRAFF 2938. NEW HOWES M 923. SABIN 51490. WAGNER-CAMP 77.
