Description

This is a fascinating collection of full color reproductions of some of the finest works in the Vatican museums. This book gudies the reader through the public galleries and behind the scenes of these Vatican museums. The editor, Alan Levy, is foreign correspondent of ARTnews magazine. In Treasures of the Vatican Collections, Levy takes the reader to see Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes being cleaned on a scaffold sixty feet high. He brings us to hear the artisans tell how they restored Michelangelo's Pieta after a crazy man smashed it with a hammer. Levy also brings the reader to meet the teams of nuns who use threads of six thousand different shades, to patch worn but precious tapestries. The lively text and numerous illustrations of Treasures of the Vatican provide an ideal, guided tour of the Vatican museums.
