Book Conditions: Very Good +; light dust soiling to top edges of boards; slight wear to the red tint in title shadowbox on th spine. DJ: Good; this is a vinyl wrapper not a paper DJ. The vinyl is intact but does have small tears, breaks to bottom edges, light rubbing. The still are very functional as a protective wrapping over the boards. Blue cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering and designs on the spine; title in red shadowbox on spine; title in gilt encircled by gilt stars on the front board. Decorative eagles and wreaths as endpapers. Clean internals. Internal hinges are sound and not split. [xxvii] 846 pp in total (1-467 in Vol.1, 471-846 in Vol.2) 4to. The Index of American Design was a 1930s Federal Art Project that held one vast collection of over 17,000 carefully documented drawings to show our country's tradition of fine craftsmanship. These full color watercolor renderings depict designs in folk, decorative, and popular arts from the early days of colonization to the last days of the nineteenth century. Among the many categories represented are furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, pewter, textiles and innumerable objects of daily use. In this book over 2,900 illustration, some 850 in color, present a previously unsurpassed panorama of American crafts and folk arts. The two volumes are composed of six books; On Land and Sea, In The Home, Around the House and Garden, Woman's World, Children's World, and Across the Nation.
