About This Item
Edinburgh: Printed for John Fairbairn, Ediburgh; James Duncan, London; & J. Cumming, Dublin, 1826. First edition (re-published in Philadelphia, 1832, and several times in the 1840s and 1850s in London). Tall 8vo. xii, 476 pp. 20 folding engraved plates; lacks half- title. Dedication: "The chief object which I have had in view, and which has not hitherto, that I am aware of, been attempted in the English language, is to give to the Philosopher, and scientific Artist, an account of the Art, from the earliest period to the present enlightened age, and to endeavor to abridge the labour, and accelerate the dexterity of the practical and operative artizan." With a contemporary ownership signature at the head of the title page "Jonathan Hughes Watch Maker / Liverpool January 1828"; the 1871 Commercial Directory and Shippers' Guide for Liverpool lists a Jonathan Hughes, "Watch maker", at 12 Church Alley. Kress C-1765. Some interior soiling, but a very good copy. Recent period-style green half-morocco and marbled boards, gilt, gilt spine title and rules. (#6167).
