Two volumes bound in one with continuous register and pagination, separate dated title-pages, pp. [iv], vi, 412; 413-763 + errata. With 41 engraved folding plates. Contemporary tree calf leather with gilt rolled frame, flat-back, gilt-tooled compartment decorations, maroon leather spine label. Covers rubbed and scuffed, chipping to heel of spine with endband exposed and loose, two old institutional stamps (German?) to volume 1 title-page, with handwritten number beneath (no other markings), very light staining to preliminary pages, otherwise a very good, clean, tight copy of an important work. MacLaurin's "defense of the Newtonian method, was written in reply to criticisms by Bishop George Berkeley of England that Newton's calculus was based on faulty reasoning.
