Description

Trenton, N.J.: D. Fenton, 1839. Hardcover. Good. Third Edition. 591 p.; 23 cm. Contemporary full calf with five spine compartments between blind-rolled rules; blind-rolled border on each board. Inscribed on title page in pencil and ink: "Rhice Nicholas Book Price $3.00." Also in pencil on title page: "Presented to D.A. Nicholas By his Father R.N." At the head of the Preface Rhice Nicholas also wrote that he purchased the book in 1839. Short handwritten index on back free endpaper. Felcone, New Jersey Books, 641. Rhice Nicholas was a justice in Morris County, N.J., in the 1830s. The section on slaves discusses the prohibition of the slave trade in New Jerse as well as other laws relating to slaves and that state, with the form to be used for manumission. In Good Condition: front board attached only by cords; loss of leather at tail of spine and minor loss at head of spine; leather is rubbed; pages are clean and solid.
