A compilation of two seventeenth century works by Nicolas de Bonnefons, here issued under a royal privilege granted to Louis Liger, sieur d'Auxerre (1658-1717). The work is divided into four books, the first three concerning cooking, the fourth dealing with gardening, and with an additional brief treatise on hunting and fishing. Liger's compilation of de Bonnefons' work continued to be revised and reissued after his death and well into the eighteenth century. And rightly so. De Bonnefons' work recognizes the primacy of excellent ingredients. The final section is considered to be the first work on the kitchen garden. London: Printed by T. B. [Thomas Bradyll] for the author, and are to be sold at his House in Hewes-Court in Black-Friers, 1682. Two works in one volume. Second separate dated title page, but pagination is continuous. Octavo (15.5 x 10 cm.), (16), 1-352, (2), 3-80, 1-32 pages. Collation: A-Ec8, 2A-2B8. Illustrated with one full page woodcut (Aa4). ~ FIRST EDITION. This issue has "chyrurgions" in line 11 and "cherry-vvine" in line 18 of title; another issue has "chyrurgeons" and "cherry-wine". We've now seen both, and ESTC notes both styles. Hartman's True Preserver is one of a number of late 17th century works offered in the shadow of Hannah Woolley's The Queen-Like Closet (1670), emphasizing activities for lady's leisure, and aimed at a growing, and newly recognized, audience of women. Included are formulae and receipts for cookery, medicine, and pharmacy. Specific instructions for a restorer, an engine, and a short section on metheglin, etc. are present as well. Rebound in full calf, with hand-tooled border and center panel front and back; spine with four raised bands and title, author, and date in gilt. Text block has a stain to bottom right corner (A-E4) but otherwise clean (some pages showing some browning). Ownership inscription to title page, "Ex Libris, Epi (sp?) Ellis". [OCLC locates nine copies; Bitting 218 (later ed.); Cagle 727; Hazlitt II 270; Notaker 565; Oxford 41; Pennell, page 140; Wing H1004].

Sheet A/R should have had R1 and R2 as A7 and A8. It was wrongly imposed so that A5r and A6v were perfected by pages of R and vice versa. The error was corrected by pasting leaves from half another copy of the sheet over the erroneous pages. Sheet I was similarly mis-imposed, but instead of using parts of a complete sheet, a half-forme was printed on one side only and pasted over I5v, 6r, 7v, 8r.
