About This Item
Chicago, Illinois: The Tribune Company, 1919. Toned with some short tears and nicks to margins.. A grouping of seven (7) "Dolls of All Nations" newspaper sheets, featuring a total of twenty-eight (28) uncut dolls from the series. The series celebrated and fostered international friendship among children following World War I. Each of the dolls here wears the traditional costume or fashion of a particular cultural or ethnic group, and can be cut out and propped up with another piece of paper to play with as a paper doll. The cultures represented in this grouping are: Italian; Greek; Cuban; Swiss; French; Javanese; Hawaiian; Persian; Spanish; Dutch; Canadian; Serbian; Danish; Chilean; Sudanese; Japanese; Egyptian; Cossack; Brazilian; Scotch; Irish; Arabian; Chinese; Mexican; Welsh; Portuguese; and Finnish. Of note is the inclusion of a "Colored" doll, which presumably was meant to represent African-American; interestingly, there would be an American doll later in the series, which highlights the persistent racial divide in the U.S. at the time. Each newspaper clipping is a full printed leaf from the Chicago Sunday Tribune, and measures approx. 17.75" by 11.75
