Buttre from an unidentified ambrotype), 4 plates (by Leadley Miller Mix) on thin pale yellow paper, xii, [13]-360p. Original cloth. 19cm. Spine sloped. Chipping at ends of backstrip. Former owner name (Christopher Lang, of Livonia) in pencil on blank leaf after front free endpaper One signature pulled. Foxing (heaviest on endpapers and frontis). A decent copy in original cloth. Steward born in Prince William County, Virginia. He escaped from slavery in 1814 and settled in Rochester, New York, where he established a business (described as a meat market and general store). His account includes the six years (1831-1837) he spent in the Wilberforce Colony in Ontario, Canada, mostly as President of their Board of Managers. This Fourth, and apparently final contemporary, American edition of this slave narrative, appears to be the only edition which lists the author as the publisher.
