Two original collages that served as the designs for the covers of Caterpillar Issue 8/9, 1969

by JESS [COLLINS]

  • Used
[San Francisco], 1969. In fine condition. Two original collages for the front and back covers, each measuring 5 x 6.75 inches. Illustration board with pictorial onlays from a variety of sources, the title lettering on front cover done by hand, cut out and applied on the back cover image, versos of each mount with printer or publisher's annotations about measurements and intended layout. Preserved in a custom folding case with a copy of the published issue of Caterpillar.

Caterpillar was edited and published by Clayton Eshleman in New York City and Sherman Oaks, CA from 1967 to 1973 in 20 numbers. In addition to poets such as Duncan, Rothenberg, Ginsberg, Creeley and Jackson MacLow, Caterpillar published visual artists and filmmakers, including Jess (whose work appeared on several covers), Carolee Schneeman, Nancy Spero, Wallace Berman, and Stan Brakhage, among others. TWO SUPERB ORIGINAL COLLAGES BY JESS. Several illuminating artistic symbols are worked into the cover: Jess adopted the initial capital 'C' from Hans Weiditz's Alphabet, circa 1520-21, which Weiditz made after designs from Albrecht Dürer. Weiditz's alphabet was popular from the time of its creation, and was copied by other woodcutters, and reproduced frequently after the rise of mechanical reproduction. It is clear from the cut that Jess used a reproduction of one of Weiditz's own original cuts, and its association with the mechanical figures (train tracks, gears) he adopted elsewhere in the two collages is an intriguing correspondence of the hand-printing (and hand-making, as with the figure of the woman with a spinning wheel) and mechanical ages. A similar dichotomy is found in Robert Duncan's essay included in the issue, "Man's Fulfillment in Order and Strife," in which he contrasts the followers of Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams with "the new gang of concrete or constructivist poets."

Description:
A fine archive of three original drawings by the English "mouth artist" John Carter, two letters by his biographer, a copy of the revised edition of Carter's Memoir, and related materials. A fine collection of three original drawings by John Carter (31 July 1815 - 2 June 1850), an English mouth artist, together with a memoir and two autograph letters discussing Carter's work by William James Dampier, Carter's first biographer. The collection also includes a heliotype after a drawing by Carter as well as a list of subscribers to Dampier's memoir. The small collection was apparently presented by Dampier to one of his friends. Original drawings by carter are rare, as most "of his work, now widely dispersed and probably unrecognized, is of course only known from nineteenth century reproductions" (Trevor Disley) John Carter was born in Coggeshall, Essex, "of humble parents", as Dampier notes. At school "he showed a disposition to scribble the figure of a man, a horse, or a bird, upon his desk or copy… Read More

Stapled wrappers, front cover with original ink scarab drawing by the author mounted. One of 33 copies. A scarce publication by one of levy's unnamed presses, being Edouard Naville's translation of 'The Litany of Ra.' The large original drawing of a scarab on the cover is reflective of levy's interest in the symbol, which he used as the title of his collection 'Scarab Poems.' Though neither his name, nor that of one of his presses, appears in the text, this has all the hallmarks of levy's important mimeographed books, and appears less frequently on the market than others. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
