Bloomington, Indiana and Santiago, Chile: The Artist, 1955. Two original artist's sketchbooks, one 12" x 9" ring-bound water color paper with 34 drawings, 23 in charcoal, 9 in pastels, 1 water color and 1 in pencil, most titled and dated in 1955; the second 11" x 7 1/2" ring-bound with 53 pencil drawings, including 3 with color pencil, the drawings mostly dated and titled, several with manuscript writing in Spanish, the dates beginning in 1959, then resumed 1979, taken up again in 1992 and with the last drawings dated 2001. Juan Antonio Orrego Salas (born 1919 Santiago, Chile and deceased 2019 Bloomington, IN) was a noted Chilean composer, musician, professor and architect who moved permanently to Bloomington, Indiana in 1961 to become the founding director of the Latin American Music Center, which was sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Given the quality of the drawings shown in these sketchbooks, particularly the pastels, he well could have also been a quite successful artist but for his career as a composer and educator. .
