ORIGINAL tan cloth covers with gilt lettering spine, black lettering front cover, color decoration lower front cover. The book measures 235mm tall x 160mm, and has 296 pages, 141 sepia photos (brown & aqua tinted), 3 folding color maps, index. CONDITION: near fine condition. The text block has been expertly re-sewn and placed with new end-papers. Most copies of the first edition require sewing since the original binding was bound with glue that deteriorated over time. The binding is now properly restored such that it will last for hundreds of years. There is minor puckering (not bad) to the upper front cover, a condition that is fairly common with this book, again due to the original glue that was used. There are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. The covers are remarkably clean and bright. There is only a tiny touch of rubbing at the extreme tips of the corners. A superb condition example of a book that often suffers serious condition problems. By far the scarcest of the Workman mountaineering books, especially in collectible condition like this example. COMPLETE with all plates, fold-outs, and maps.
