A very good copy in publishers green cloth binding with spine decorated and lettered in gilt, including the correct spelling of the publishers name at the bottom. Signed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper, Dated 1923. The top of the signed leaf and the half title page have a small indentation where a paper clip has been used.Aside from some light rubbing to the extremities this is a very good tight copy, the gilt on the spine still strong and bright. Loosely inserted is the front panel from the rare dustwrapper, showing a full colour illustration by J. Dewar Mills within a grey border. The whole panel dark blue with grey title and author. 8vo. (9 x 5.9 inches). Fold out map at the rear in fine condition. Text pages clean and fresh throughout. Top of page edges still a deep and pleasing red. The front blank free endpaper has a neat previous owner's name and place (Oxford) written in blue ink and is dated December 1954. Some light offsettting to the blank endpapers from the dustwrapper but generally very good indeed internally. Publishers deep red cloth binding with gilt lettering and ring device to the spine. the gilt is dulled and there are a few light but small stains to the cloth at the edges.
The original, correct 1st state, dustwrapper still has the price intact on the inner flap. There is a split, without loss, to the top third of the front hinge but this is not noticeable when enclosed in a protective sleeve, The spine is darkened and there are a few very small chips to the edges at the hinges. Overall a very good book in a near to very good dustwrapper.
Only 3250 copies were published of this, the true first edition, first printing of the second part of Tolkien's epic tale. -- More photos available on request.

Originally printed in the April 1885-March 1886 issues of "To-Day", this first edition was printed from the corrected and revised stereos of the original setting for the journal. Humes's second novel, following 'The Underground City,' both of which led to his being considered by Esquire magazine as having the same promise as two obscure guys named Updike and Styron (whoever they are). Anyway, he met a guy named Leary who introduced him to a little substance known as LSD, and after seriously indulging his fondness for the hallucinogen he became a trifle paranoid and a bit delusional, which pretty much ended his writing career. Humes was co-founder (with Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton) of The Paris Review. He died of prostate cancer in 1992. Black cloth w/gilt lettering, 184 pages.
