New York: Harper & Brothers. Good. 1840. First Edition, First Issue. Hardcover. First edition, first issue of Dana's travels at sea in the 1830s. Rebacked with full leather spine; original tan cloth of rear board is missing but original cloth of front board is present. Housed in modern clamshell box. First issue with dot over the "i" in the word "in" on copyright page, and the unbroken running head on page 9. State is unknown as the original rear cloth is missing. Original boards have heavy wear and soiling; "Town of Brighton School District No. 5" written in ink and pencil on front pastedown and endpaper; p. 303-4 has a ½" hole in bottom corner and p. 305-6 has a ¼" hole in bottom corner; text block has moderate foxing. "If not the most widely read book on California, certainly this ranks extremely high on such a list. The author sailed up and down the California coast trading for hides from January, 1835, until May, 1836. He possessed not only extraordinarily keen powers of observation but a fine facility for expressing his ideas in writing
