Paul Landacre (1893-1963) eventually achieved fame for his woodcut artistry but struggled for years to earn a living with his art. He moved to southern California around 1916 after dropping out of Ohio State University to work in commercial art. Soon Landacre moved north to the Los Angeles area and was befriended by bookseller Jake Zeitlin, librarian Lawrence Clark Powell, writer and designer Merle Armitage and Ward Ritchie. Through this core group commission and patronage work began to come his way and his work soon was winning regional and national acclaim.
Landacre and Ritchie collaborated on at least 25 projects and built a lasting professional and personal relationship, as reflected in this tender essay. Minor changes were made from this first draft to finished book.
