About This Item

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1935. Limited Edition, #1134/1500. Hardcover. Quarto, xv, [iii], 363, [3] pages; VG; bound in publishers original brown buckram, embossed in gilt; mild wear, slight discoloration to edges of textblock, interior clean; housed in publisher's original G slipcase, notoriously fragile hinges, with this copy having the bottom partially separated, but the entire case in one piece, some wear and rubbing; with original glassine present, spine largely missing, but flaps attached to covers; Limited Edition, #1134/1500, signed by Matisse only; with 6 soft-ground etchings by Henri Matisse with 20 preliminary drawings reproduced on blue and yellow paper; shelved case 3. When asked why he decided to illustrate the Calypso, Aeolus, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe and Ithaca episodes of Homer's Odyssey rather than any events from Joyce's novel, Matisse replied that it was because he had not read Joyce's Ulysses. This was the only American publication of Matisse's illustrations.;
