Harriet Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom's Cabin; Or, Life Among the Lowly. Boston: John P. Jewett & Company, 1852. First edition, first issue as per BAL. Two volumes; octavo (7.5 x 4.75 inches; 191 x 120 mm.). x, [13 (sic)]-312; iv, [1]-322, [2, blank] pages. With three engraved plates inserted in each volume. Publisher's dark brown cloth, BAL's B binding (no priority); front boards and spines stamped in gilt, boards decoratively ruled and stamped with oval panels in blind; rear boards stamped with central motif in blind. Boards worn; spine of Volume I chipped; rear joint of Volume II tearing; both volumes skewed and somewhat shaken. Text worn, soiled, creased, and intermittently foxed and dampstained; several gutters in both volumes starting; pages 231-238 and 243-250 in Volume II loose; plate facing page 62 in Volume II chipped and torn; glue residue on page 107 and small red spots on page 159 in Volume II, previous owner's ink and pencil signature on front free endpaper of Volume I, and front free endpaper and rear blank in Volume II. Good. Chemised in quarter black morocco slipcase (slipcase scuffed). BAL 19343.

[Together with:] Harriet Beecher Stowe. Signed Check. Boston: Nov. 3, 1865. (6.75 x 2.75 inches; 173 x 71 mm.). Check is made out to "the order of Mrs. H. B. Stowe" for two hundred dollars, and is signed on the recto by the publisher, Ticknor Fields. Check number 1328, on their personalized business check. On the verso, Stowe has endorsed "H. B. Stowe", with two counter-signatures (unknown people, presumably bank officers) and an ink stamp. Check has a vertical crease and is quite worn at the edges, two small holes in the central portion. Good.
