About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1929. Hardcover textured. Very Good-Collectible/Good. 6"x8.25" 500 pgs. Navy textured boards w/faded gilt letters on spine. Spine straight, binding tight, pages clean and w/soft tone. Not x-library, DJ in Brodart mylar, unmarked, not price clipped ($1.00). Frontispiece "The Cabin" by Kemille (?). Date on TP but not CR page. Moisture exposure to DJ w/chips and edge wear. The narrative drive of Stowe's classic novel is often overlooked in the heat of the controversies surrounding its anti-slavery sentiments. In fact, it is a compelling adventure story with richly drawn characters and has earned a place in both literary and American history. Stowe's puritanical religious beliefs show up in the novel's final, overarching theme—the exploration of the nature of Christianity and how Christian theology is fundamentally incompatible with slavery.
