About This Item
New York: Brewer, Warren and Putnam, 1931. 347pp. Yellow cloth boards, black titles on spine and front board. Black decoration on front board. Staining to spine but little other cosmetic damage to binding, and no sign of staining internally. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down. Pages evenly age toned. The volume recounts the process of planning, funding and carrying out the first submarine expedition to the Antarctic. Australian Hubert Wilkins led the expedition and the American financier Lincoln Ellsworth provided funding. Despite the extensive planning and lofty scientific ambitions, mechanical issues undermined much of the Wilkins-Ellsworth expedition. A few experiments did come to pass, but the larger goal of submerging and crossing under the North Pole proved impossible to achieve. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. 8vo.
