About This Item
From the back of d.j. and book: "This is the story of America's first Streamliner, Union Pacific's "Little Zip" M-10000, and the era of early Streamliner development on the Union Pacific prior to World War II. Responding to mounting auto and bus competition, the Streamliner offered Union Pacific Railroad's top management a chance to bring passengers back to the railroad. Fully articulated, it was a completely new type of high-speed railway train, graceful in form, highly pleasing in color harmonies, and preeminent in utility, convenience and comfort. In the spring of 1934, Union Pacific's new High-Speed Stream Line train went on a 13,000 mile 22-state tour. Not only was the M-10000 absolutely revolutionary and futuristic in design, but a bright yellow spot of hope in the very depths of the Great Depression. Over the next seven years, the M-10000 would operate between Kansas City, Missouri, and Salina, Kansas, where it would be remembered as the 'City of Salina'. This volume covers not only the M-10000 but the fleet of great Streamline trains serving Chicago, Denver, Portland, San Francisco and Los angeles that it spawned in the years before World War II."
