Asbury was an American journalist and writer best known for his books detailing crime during the 19th and early-20th centuries, (An Informal History of the Chicago Underworld was loosley adapted to Martin Scorsese's 2002 movie.) Asbury wrote Up from Methodism in 1926 following the a stunt designed, and sucessful at provoking free-speech trials, (Mencken's American Mercury magazine publication of "Hatrack'). Up from Methodism taunting title, plays on Booker T. Washington's early-century bestseller Up from Slavery, gives an idea of what Asbury thought he had escaped.
