About This Item
New Press. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket. 1993. Stated 1st Edition. Hardcover. 1565840208 . Gathers a vast range of documents and photographs -- from letters and turn-of-the-century items in the Chicago "Defender, Crisis, and Opportunity, to scholarly research and selections from some of the finest American literary writing, including work by Zora Neale Hurston, James Weldon Johnson, and Ralph Ellison, as well as Wright, DuBois, and Bontemps. A uniquie resource for students and teachers of urban and American studies, this volume is also a moving and eye-opening anthology of African American literature, scholarship, and journalism from the first half of this century. Two page spread of a black and white photograph of two men, Tom Shipp and Abe Smith, were lynched in Marion, Indiana, August 7, 1930, "by party or parties unknown". In the foreground of this picture, are almost 2 dozen people watching the lynching. Most of the faces are looking at the camera, which means the above phrase of "by party or parties unknown" gives a clear insight to the level of discrimination in those days. Light soiling to page edges. Interior pages very clean and unmarked. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 216 pages; 28488 .
